Karin van Kooten
Karin van Kooten (1985, Raalte) is a classically trained but broadly oriented improvising violinist with a great love for swing, performing in many styles like classical, jazz, gipsy and folk music.
Karin began her classical training at the age of 7 with Nico Dezaire. After finishing the classical studies at Brabants Conservatorium in 2008- feeling the classical music is not giving her the fullfilment she is looking for- she starts exploring jazz and improvisation, taking lessons with Oene van Geel and Tim Kliphuis. Later on, she finds her home in Paris, where during two years she breathes the combination of traditional jazz found in the little parisian bars, and more modern jazz, taught in the school of Didier Lockwood where she is studying.
At the moment she is teaching and performing in different settings, on a frequent basis with Reinier Voet & Pigalle44 (NL) as well as in her own jazz trio. Besides that, she’s a coach/teacher at the annual Grappelli Camp in The Netherlands, an initiative for guitarists, violinists and bass players, coming from all styles and from all over the world to learn to play in the style of Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt.
Karin van Kooten vormt samen met Thomas van Geelen (cello), Pablo Rodriguez (viool) en Yanna Pelser (altviool) het North Sea String Quartet.
Op zondag 5 februari 2017 traden ze op.
